We sat shiv`a this week for Mom, as I mentioned last week. Pretty much everyone we knew either came to the house or called, to pay their respects. We even got calls from the doctors who treated her, expressing their sadness at her passing. She really was well-loved.

Then we found out after shabbat that my friend and teacher Shelomo ben-Avraham of Mechon Mamre had passed away over shabbat. He influenced a great many people, and was well respected for his encyclopedic knowledge of Rambam’s “Mishne Torah” as well as a wide variety of other Torah subjects. He will be sorely missed.

He knew he was in poor health, so a few weeks ago he gave me access to all the Mechon Mamre infrastructure, and charged me with maintaining the site and answering emails to it. This is quite a heavy responsibility, and I’m well aware of the impossibility of filling Mori Shelomo’s shoes. I will try to make him proud.

What’s going on?

After getting up from shiv`a, we started to try to get the house back in order. Among other things, we returned the wheelchair we had received from Yad Sarah, and donated her collection of various prescription medicines to Haverim LeRefuʼah. Then we started trying to clear up the room she was in. In her filing cabinet (after all, she was an executive secretary for 30 years!) she had kept her medical records stretching back to 1992. Please, people, have mercy on those you leave behind, and don’t keep 30 years of medical records!

And life goes on…

This shabbat we’ve been invited out for one meal, and for the rest we’ll have:
pita, traditional cholent, various salatim, and lemon-poppy cake.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
