The kids, again?!? Yes, they’re here for another two shabbatot, so you’ll have to endure my preening.

It was as busy a week as you might have expected, but with a twist: Esther and I were in loco parentis for two nights and three days, while the parentals went on a well-deserved vacation far from here.

I was expecting the kids to severally and jointly complain of missing their parents, at various times and with varying amounts of desperation — but in fact, they didn’t complain even once. Zippo. Esther and I take that as a confirmation of our bona fides as “good guardians”; not sure how Daniela and Jeremy are taking it…

My upper body strength has increased dramatically due to the incessant use thereof by spider-monkey analogues. Likewise, my speed and agility have improved due to the need for speed when pursuing Master Joseph in his perambulations (of which there are an increasing number and quality). Esther’s skills in baby-hygiene-maintenance have been refreshed (I confess that — inexplicably — I am usually “unavailable” at those times). We managed to bathe the tots simultaneously without mishap, though it was a close one.

It turns out that the Grands are quite well behaved, all things considered, and are independent enough that the overwatch task isn’t very onerous. Most of the time, that is. I’ll just mention that I would be quite pleased to never see another “Spot” book again, ever.

As for the parentals, they had a great time off in the middle of nowhere, at the “Beresheet” hotel in Mitspeh Ramon. Wild landscapes and animals, fine dining, no children. It was a challenging time for them, to be sure, but they managed.

Some things:

Sarah came while we were parentalizing, to give some moral support. She was given the honor of accompanying the tots (with Esther) to the park around the corner from us. I think a full afternoon with them maxed-out her patience.

Since Esther and I “took vacation” this week, we’ve got nothing particular to write about regarding work. Just kids, all the time. ALL THE TIME.

This shabbat will be the warmest day of the past week. Temperatures will dip a bit until mid-week. Still mostly stable weather, typical of our summer. A/C will be on…

Our menu this shabbat may include:
ḥalla, barbecued chicken, many sides, various salatim, and banana-bread.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
