Dec 7th -- sorry, no devar torah this week due to lack of energy
Hi, again!
Well, the entire chez Aaron was sickly this past week. Sarah got sick first, probably catching something from one of the artistes at her school. She lovingly passed on her virus to Esther and I, and the whole lot of us have been sick all week. Not sick enough to stay home in bed, but the kind of enervating affliction which leaves one too tired to accomplish much besides the mandatory. B"H, we are on the mend and hope that the upcoming holiday of ḥanuka finds us rekindling our energy sources as well as our spiritual connections!
It was difficult to summon the energy needed to follow current events this week, but the events were energizing enough that it was impossible to ignore them. Of particular interest was the ongoing global uproar over Israel's announced plans to approve new construction in Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria (a.k.a. the West Bank) in reaction to the UN's decision to upgrade the PLO's status.
You know, it's an upside-down world. The UN and the West in general are extremely worried about the deadly Israeli house, the most dangerous weapon on the planet. More deadly than the imminent Iranian atomic weapons, far worse than the ongoing Syrian massacre of tens of thousands of civilians. Way more horrible than the continual attempts of the Arab world to destroy Israel and the West and establish a worldwide Caliphate. Yes, the deadly Israeli house is clearly the biggest threat to world peace ever contemplated.
In Israeli political news: it is now confirmed that Israelis will have 34 parties to choose from in the upcoming elections. Here's the official list from the Knesset website. Most of the parties nobody's ever heard of, and they won't make it into the next Knesset -- since a party has to have won at least two seats (out of 120) in order to make it into the Knesset. So for example, people voting for "Green Leaf" (whose platform is legalization of marijuana) or "The Pirates" (whose platform is "digital rights" among other things) will have no effect since those parties have no chance of passing the threshold for two seats. Next week I'll try to have a rundown of the platforms and positions of each of the parties.
Just to prove everyone who thought she doesn't have a sense of humor wrong, Tzippi Livni has added Amir Peretz to her list. So now The Movement: led by Tzippi Livni has at its helm two former heads-of-parties (she of "Kadima", he of "Labor"). Both were abject failures as leaders of their own parties, so it makes sense they would have a natural affinity for each other. By all accounts she is unable to get along with anyone, so I wonder: what is Livni thinking? A shnekel for your thoughts!
This coming week, Jeremy's parents will be here in the Land, and we look forward to visiting with them. In a couple weeks, my nephew Chris will be here on a Birthright trip, and afterwards will visit with us for two weeks. So we've got to get ready for the visitors and get ourselves prepared for the onslaught!
And as I mentioned in the opening paragraph, the holiday of ḥanuka is quick approaching -- this moṣaei-shabbat in fact! Tomorrow night we light the first candle, and the holiday continues through the following Sunday. We're saving up calories now so we can indulge in all the fried-foods to come next week...
This shabbat we're going to take it easy and stay in bed. When we're not in bed, we'll eat: chicken soup, pastel de papas, green beans, green salad, salatim, chile sin carne, and fruit salad
Until next week,
shabbat shalom and ḥanuka sameaḥ!
