Hi, again!
The storm winds of change are sweeping the middle-east, and apparently some of them are making the Egyptians go bonkers. Other storm winds are approaching the east coast of the US, threatening billions of dollars of destruction. Fortunately, the winds from Syria did not sweep down on the wedding we attended in the north!
If you're living outside the Land, you are excused for not knowing that hundreds of rockets and various projectiles have been launched from Gaza over the past week, specifically targeting civilians. The mainstream media in the west has chosen not to report on almost any of the multiple murderous attacks -- so again, you are excused for not knowing about it. But now that you do know, perhaps you might want to ask why the "friendly" countries in which you live choose to continue funding the war-criminals in Gaza? You know, the "humanitarian aid" which gets propelled into our civilian centers by means of rocket-propulsion?
The Egyptians are apparently intent on cancelling the peace-treaty with Israel. They've already reneged on their agreement to provide Israel with natural gas, and our hapless government has agreed to let more Egyptian troops into the Sinai peninsula -- to control the unruly Bedouin threat there. But they are not controlling it at all, and I fear we will soon be involved in a conflict with Egypt again. As a wiser man than I said, "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it".
This past week a fairly significant earthquake (5.8 more or less on the Richter scale) struck the area around Washington D.C., and this weekend hurricane Irene is scheduled to travel up the eastern seaboard and wreak destruction from the Carolinas to the Northeast. We should all be calm, however, because Obama doesn't expect another recession. I suppose he will just "deem" the extensive damage away! B"H, let's hope and pray that our friends and family on the east coast of the US remain safe through the upcoming storms.
Speaking of family and friends on the east coast, Daniela was traveling to and fro this past week, visiting D.C. and other places. She had a good time, and is back in NYC just in time for the storm. STAY INSIDE!
Our neighbors invited us to their son's wedding; and this being Israel, that pretty much meant we had to go. The bride is from Ramat Magshimim, just a few kilometers from the Syrian border -- so the wedding was there. Our neighbors arranged transport for the almost sixty guests from the Jerusalem area, and we had a relaxing trip to the northeastern edge of the country. The place was beautiful, the wedding was enjoyable, and the musical group included someone we know from Latma... an unusual surprise.
Last shabbat we had a lot of guests, as I mentioned in last week's blog. Very nice family, with whom it turns out we had a number of friends in common. We hope their qlita here goes smoothly and well; and we hope the rest of our friends and family make the move here sooner rather than later!
And to help with the acclimation of new immigrants, Sarah will be starting her second year of sherut leumi next week, at the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption (known as misrad haqlita). We hope her many talents will be put to good use there, and that she has an excellent year.
No guests this week. Our menu will include: homemade ḥalla, baked bass in spicy tomato sauce, chicken soup, chicken breast w/ mushrooms and olives, various salatim, chili and rice, ice cream, homemade cinnamon rolls
Until next week,
shabbat shalom!
