We were busy again this week, no surprises there. I spent nearly the entire week debugging code. Esther’s been doing her usual taxation disentangling.

In belated honor of our anniversary, Esther’s birthday, and our aliyaversary, we went out for a rather extravagant dinner at Pitmaster in Jerusalem. A seven-course meat meal, with entertainment and drinks included, and the place was packed. Our table was full of twenty-somethings, none of whom seemed interested in conversing with us of rather more mature years. Indeed, it wasn’t possible to converse over the “background” music.

That said, the food was excellent (not for vegetarians!), the entertainment was fine, and it was fun to see people get up and dance to some of the music. All in all, it was an enjoyable experience, and we can now say “we’ve been there”.

The kind folks at “Triggernometry” interviewed John Spencer, a military analyst, who debunked many lies being circulated about Israel’s Gaza war. Among other things, the Triggernometry folks mentioned being dismayed they were unable to get Netanyahu for an interview. But then, they did!. You’re encouraged to watch both, but Bibi is definitely a better speaker than Mr. Spencer.

A short poem I penned in loving memory of Rachel Corrie, since she’s being lionized on social-media:

To dear old St. Pancake,
let's raise a glass!
In only one take,
she was flat on her ass.

(I have never claimed to be a “nice person” — my reputation is thus ensured!)

Sundries:

  • No one killed more journalists than Israel (except everyone else)!
  • To support the downtrodden Gazans, Spain air-dropped moldy rations to them (some claim the rations contained pork, though I’ve been unable to verify that). Oh, and some of the air-dropped packages killed people by squashing them. ¡Muy bien hecho, España!
  • Anti-Israel propaganda hits peak-stupid: “save the hummus”.
  • ProPublica report: Microsoft failed to disclose key details about use of China-based engineers in U.S. defense work. This seems bad.
  • Dvorak on the end of late-night TV (if you’re old enough to even know what that is).
  • Whatever you might think about Georgia Meloni’s politics (she’s PM of Italy, in case you didn’t know…), she has the best facial expressions! Not a poker-player, I take it.

With your permission, I’ll take just a moment to grumble bitterly about the “websocket” protocol (WS). My “8th” programming language includes support for a web-server which handles WS. However, its support was only partial, and this week I’ve been working on making it more complete. But the WS protocol is – excuse the expression – retarded. First of all, you can’t tell how big a “frame” is until you’ve parsed a significant portion of it. Then, you might need to read more frames before you’ve got a complete packet. But in between your “continuation frames”, you can get other, “control frames”, so you have to be prepared to handle those, while you’re handling the ones you care about.

Like I said, it’s retarded: needlessly complex, and a PITA to implement correctly. But, I digress…

I’m feverishly working on next Monday’s shiur, on the “eiruv”…

We’re well pleased the weather this week has been normal for ME summer. shabbat will also be normal, presumably, and the normality will continue into next week. Score!

This shabbat we’re out for one meal; for the rest, the menu may contain:
homemade ḥalla, meatballs and potatoes, tuna salad, roasted vegetables, various salatim, and walnut-date cake.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
