Israel update: we’re going for the 3rd round of general elections in a calendar year, for the first time ever. Yeah. The two biggest parties couldn’t play nice and get along, so we’re being sucked into the Vortex of Stupidity once again. They did manage to move the date from Purim, though that would have been most appropriate.

I’m already getting political propaganda SMS messages again. Attention developers: I’m looking for an “electrocute sender” option!

We had a busy week. Sarah’s been letting us know her birthday’s approaching for at least a month. So the day arrived, but she and Yarin went off to Rome. Children!

But she’ll be back in a couple days, and she and a couple of her friends will be here for “Thanksgiving”. Yes, mid-December. And “Happy Birthday” to my youngest!

When she was in “National Service”, she made friends with some other girls, and one time they came to visit when we were still doing that “Thanksgiving thing”. Those (Israeli) girls really liked it, so pretty much every year since then, they’ve come over sometime around the end of the year, for “Thanksgiving”. Only this year, the previous voracious carnivore is vegetarian, and her husband the (actual) commando who could eat 2kg of meat at a sitting is vegan. I think this is what our Sages ob”m referred to as the “the decline of the generations”.

Stranger than fiction:

  • Greta Thunberg, the annoying, overwrought, teenage climate-change saviour, is “TIME” magazine’s “person of the year”. Lest we forget, Yasser Arafat was also “man of the year”. Their criteria need some revision, I think.
  • A banana duct-taped to a wall fetched $120,000 as “art”. Another artist ate the banana. Now, admittedly, a good banana is worth getting, but I can probably get a few shipping containers’ worth for 120K…
  • The West has gone crazy: “menstrual poverty”.
  • In Great Britain, the Conservatives spanked Labour by a sound majority. So British Jews are saved for now from having to decide whether to stay in an increasingly anti-Semitic Britain headed by an outright anti-Semite, or just bide their time and hope for the best. The smart ones will see the writing on the wall; but that’s going to be a small minority, most likely.

Nota bene: Your mobile-phone should not be treated with casual contempt. Hackers have been attacking fully patched Android phones successfully. Not only mobile-devices are at risk: even Intel’s much-touted SGX security technology is vulnerable, despite Intel’s claims for its security.

The moral of the story: “don’t trust, and repeatedly verify”.

In other news: we raided our and our friend’s fruit trees just before a major wind-storm blew in, and came away with kilos of lemons (regular and Meyer), kumquats, and tangerines. So there’s going to be a lot of citrus joy happening in the near future…

We got a good amount of rain this week, along with wind storms and cold weather. Nothing like what’s going on in the USA, but cold by our standards. We’re expecting clear and cold weather, but seasonal, for the next week.

Just the three of us this shabbat. We’ll have:
homemade ḥalla, lemon chicken, butternut-squash soup, red rice, various salatim, and lemon poppy-seed cake.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
