Hi, again!
Tu Beshevat came and went this week, and I delivered my devar torah at work. A slightly more refined version of it is here. The weather's been cold and mostly dry, though it's raining now on and off. The synagogue web-site is open to the public, B"H!
The website has taken an inordinate amount of my time. Not because it was difficult to write, but because nobody (still) is in charge of important decisions. And also because rather than give feedback when it was requested, people have waited until the last moment. They then have the temerity to complain that I am "short with them", as if the only thing I have going on is dealing with the silly website. Remind me again, how do I get roped into these things? In any case, the site is open for business and the feedback I've received from actual users has been positive, so I'm OK with that result.
Esther and I took the plunge this week, and transferred our cell-phone service from Cellcom to the cut-rate competitor Rami Levy. My analysis of our phone bills told me we could save about 50% on our cell-phone costs -- that amounts to somewhere between 1500 and 2500 NIS a year, which is a lot of money. Even factoring in the need for a new phone for Esther, we would recoup that in only a few months. But after we transfered, Cellcom called me to attempt to convince us we should return to them. They offered a one-time cash rebate, and a billing plan similar to, but more expensive than the one Rami Levy offers. They did not seem to understand that I did not want a more expensive plan; I think their math skills are lacking! Anyway, we need to get Sarah transferred as well (that's where the bulk of our savings will come from) but her phone will not work on the R"L network (which they lease from Pelephone).
Esther's new phone is the same as mine, a Samsung Galaxy Gio. It's a reasonably priced phone, but now that I'm trying to get one for Sarah -- apparently nobody has them in stock because Customs is holding up the shipments. Nothing, apparently, to do with the general strike now entering its third day. Just "because". So while I really like this particular phone model, we may need to look for something different for Sarah so we can cut the @@#$#@$ people at Cellcom off and save money!
In manly news: I did a bit of plastering to patch up the cement I laid down in the air-conditioning trench-in-the-wall. I'll have to do another layer, then paint. Replaced several fluorescent bulbs which had burned out (after four years, I guess that's ok). And our plants we planted last Friday seem to be still alive, bravo!
In girly news: Sarah's getting her hair trimmed. Daniela is sending out swatches of the fabric she wants the sisters and mothers in her wedding party to match. The fathers' ties apparently also need to match.
Around the world:
- The "Anonymous" dingleberries rant against Israel, threaten to wage cyber-war against us. Yawn.
- Global warming? Maybe not in the Himalayas, despite Al Gore's inconvenient truths.
- Now I would have thought that members of one of the most bloody and oppressive governments in the world would require better passwords. Don't suppose "Anonymous" will attack them, it's too easy...
We're eating out shabbat day, so we only have to deal with dinner tonight and se`uda shelishit tomorrow afternoon. We're working on:
artichokes,
butternut-squash soup,
garlic roast-beef,
oven baked potatoes,
zucchini quiche,
salatim,
baklava, chocolate croissants
