This week, I made the second “beta-release” of zemanim, for all platforms except iOS. If you’re interested in helping out with testing it, just write to me.

Of more immediate interest (to me), I finally got a shot of something for my shoulder. That part has been painful for more than a year, and PT and analgesics haven’t helped. So I went to an orthopedist I’d been to some years ago, with mixed feelings: last time he seemed gruff and unpleasant. Surprisingly, this time he was was all smiles and very friendly, and I didn’t have to beg for the shot. Hopefully in a few days it will have taken full effect and I can put this behind me (the arm, that is; haven’t been able to do that for the better part of a year).

Esther’s been complaining our AC isn’t up to snuff, and with the most recent heat-wave it was noticeably straining to even approach 26C (78F). So I called the guy who’d installed it, to have a look and give it a cleaning. Turns out, we hadn’t actually cleaned it in 13 years. Apparently, that makes all the difference, and it now works as it should, and doesn’t make strange sounds. But I had to pay for it with four hours of my life, since the guy didn’t stop talking the entire time he was here.

Various things of note:

The work on my “zemanim” app has been interesting, because Android turned up some bugs which existed but were “latent” on other platforms. Uncovering the reasons behind the latent bugs was a job and a half; if you’re interested in details, feel free to ask me — I won’t bore the general public with tech-talk.

And… I’ve completed digitizing the VHS tapes Esther brought back from Argentina. There are some great ones of our kids when they were still cute; and there is quite a lot of boring travelogue. A mixed bag, but at least I’ve preserved them for posterity. Again: if you want technical details, ask me…

The weather was very warm, and today will be even warmer. Fortunately, shabbat will be cooler, B”H! Still hoping for normal summer weather…

This shabbat we’re trying out:
homemade ḥalla, baked chicken, celeriac purée, fried okra, various salatim, fruit, and spice cake.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
