Mar 28th sorry, no devar torah today

Hi, again!

As I crowed on Sunday, I’m finally “free at last”! This past Sunday was my last day at the company I had been with for the past two and half years. That entire day was given over to me “briefing” my soon-to-be-ex-coworkers on all sorts of technical details hidden in my massive cranium. They gave me a small going-away party, complete with wine and cookies; and my managers mentioned all the different contributions I had made to the company over the years. I couldn’t help thinking I should have been paid a lot more…

Sarah spent several days on a trip “up north”, where she was filming one of her schoolmate’s films. The film is about some of the pioneers of the early Zionist movement, so she got a bit of a history lesson. She enjoyed seeing the north since it’s pretty — but she said there’s not much to do there. On her trip northward, the bus-driver was exceptionally happy. He sang, pointed out the scenery and was generally “up”. I hope it was a natural high.

Esther and I started on pesaḥ preparations this week. Even though she’s been sick with a sinus-cold, she started some cleaning. We also stocked up at our butcher, got some more wine and began thinking about the menu. As usual, we are expectantly looking forward to the seder and being reunited with Daniela and Jeremy.

We also want to get our garden cleaned up before pesaḥ. The spring has sprung, and all the plants are getting uppity. But since we don’t have the time to do it ourselves, nor do I want to end up on the injured list, we have been looking for a gardener to come and do the hard work. Well, let me tell you: that’s easier said than done! We’ve contacted four or five different gardeners, each said “I’ll come over…” and yet none has showed up so far. I mean, it’s not like we’re asking for volunteers: these guys are supposedly professional gardeners. So I’ve started doing a half-hour or so a day, hopefully I’ll get it under control in the next two weeks. The real problem is that we have trees which need proper pruning, and I’m afraid of messing them up.

Esther and I spent time (as usual) in business meetings. This week we met with a guy who owns a software-consulting company, and spoke with him about being an “early adopter” of our product. He gave us some good feedback, and we’ve got some food for thought about just what the “final product” (version 1.0) will be. Still needs more thought.

In the meantime, I’ve been waging unholy battle with Windows. Specifically, trying to make Windows work as reasonably as the other platforms I’m supporting. Goodness me, but Windows is primitive underneath it all! I had forgotten how unhelpful it is. More importantly, I had forgotten just how inaccurate the technical documentation Microsoft publishes is! Oh, well, that’s what I get paid for.

The USA is proving to be despicable. Or, rather, the USA’s leaders are. No, it’s not King Barack alone — so far all US presidents have chosen to use Pollard as a political pawn, and prefer he languish and die in prison. But this last — if it’s true — is beyond despicable. It makes me ashamed to have been born in the “Land of the Free”.

And the Pollard affair, along with Obama’s lack of trustworthiness in foreign policy, make us Israelis very nervous. Most Israelis never thought they would see an actively hostile US administration with such inept leadership. But here it is, and it’s worrying not only to us, but to all the US’s various allies.

In other news:

For your information: last night Israel went from “standard time” to “daylight-savings time”, so we’re back in synch with the US... in case you were wondering.

This week it’s just the three of us, doing a simple menu:
baked chicken, potato salad, stuffed artichokes, lentil salad, beet salad, ratatouille, brown rice, vegetable gumbo, salatim and orange cake.

Until next week,
shabbat shalom!
