You probably have noticed that the blog’s layout has changed a lot!

Continuing last week’s server upgrades, I updated the blog’s server, and in the process updated the blog software and changed the “skin” it uses to a more modern and mobile-friendly version. Let me know whether or not you think it’s an improvement!

We were incredibly busy this week. Esther had to go get an updated version of her Argentinian identity card. She had thought she was no longer an Argentine citizen, having taken US citizenship decades ago; but the Republica Argentina didn’t agree. Since she’ll probably be traveling there to help her brothers with estate issues, she needs a valid ID, so she schlepped halfway across the country one day and got the document she had ordered several months prior.

Next week, as soon as shabbat is over, the holiday of Passover (pesaḥ or פסח) begins. Most of you know it as the “Festival of Unleavened Bread”, but we know it as “The Time of Uncontrolled Shopping”. It’s only a week, but the quantity of supplies most of us acquire verges on the ludicrous.

In any event: we got our festival supplies from the butcher, the wine shop, the flour mill, the garlic-guy, the greengrocer, the nut-purveyor, the coffee-warehouse, the book-seller, and the supermarket. The only one we missed is the candlestick maker. We started the process of clearing out all the “ḥameṣ” (leavening or leavened grain), and don’t have much left to get rid of. Just need to turn over the kitchen… good thing we’ve got another week.

Unlike last year’s dismal affair, this year we are planning on having our normal complement of guests for the seder!

I dragged Mom to the “wound clinic” again, to follow-up on her toe’s status. This time the staff were happy with her progress, so we’re to keep doing what we’ve been doing. I had to succumb to my periodic blood tests, and so far the results are as expected.

One thing I haven’t mentioned so far is our impending journey. We’ve got a trip to the US scheduled for just after pesaḥ to visit Daniela and family; she’s due any week now. Hopefully the new addition will hold off until after we arrive, but these things rarely accommodate our wishes. So in addition to the pesaḥ craziness, we’ve got trip preparations to finalize. We were fortunate in being able to find someone to stay with Mom while we’re gone; that was the biggest hurdle, really.

Due to the pandemic and accompanying restrictions, we weren’t sure we’d be able to make the trip. However, as far as we currently know, we’ll be able to travel as planned. So we got the travel insurance policies (medical, most importantly) with riders for “what if the gov’t closes the borders”. Since we’re leaving right after the holiday, the couple of days after will be most hectic. I’m really, really (!) looking forward to seeing my grand-kids in person! And Daniela and Jeremy, too, of course…

Aside from all this activity, next week we’ve got the fourth Israeli elections in two years, and I need to take my mom to get her eye treatment. This, in addition to finalizing pesaḥ preparations. Another busy week to be sure.

The weather was fine, with some cool and some warm days. This coming week looks to be mostly hot. The yearly pre-pesaḥ dust storm should be arriving just after I wash the windows.

This shabbat’s menu includes:
pita, boneless rib roast, roasted potatoes, various salatim, “oriental” noodle salad, and something from the bakery.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
