Welp. It’s been quite the active week, and not in a particularly enjoyable way! I went to shul this past shabbat, and while we were in the prefatory section of the morning prayers, the air-raid sirens started blasting. So the prayers were moved downstairs — which is no safer (and arguably less safe!) — to continue. I assumed Esther would hear the sirens and stay home; but no, she came to shul because she didn’t want me to be alone (and we were supposed to have lunch with friends). I put the kibosh on the lunch-date, and we went home right after the Torah reading. Which, in a most timely manner, included the “remember Amalek” reading.

Since then, through the week we’ve had dozens of sirens, and had far too many gatherings with our neighbors in our local bomb-shelter. Not that I’m complaining.

But the holiday of Purim was Monday-night/Tuesday-day this week — a holiday commemorating the destruction of another Persian (well, Amalekite with the passive support of a Persian king) who attempted to destroy us. The Mullahs should have read up on what happened to their ilk back then, and taken it to heart…

We hosted the Purim “feast” this year, since our friend who ordinarily does that was supposed to have undergone a medical procedure (and because of the war, that got cancelled, but we’d already stepped up to bat). We did a barbecue, and ample alcohol was imbibed by all, ensuring a most convivial gathering.

If you’ve not kept up on the progress of the war, my man Preston Stewart has an ongoing series of videos with analysis: Day 1, and more, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5, Day 6.

Of note:

I don’t want to ever again hear anyone say Islam is a “religion of peace”, or that Jerusalem is its “third holiest city”. The assholes from Iran ( “Twelver” Shi`a Muslim fanatics) launched multiple rockets towards Jerusalem and could easily have destroyed “Al Aqsa” (not that I’d object to that). The local Muslims (mostly Sunni) in Jerusalem turn their asses towards the Temple Precinct (“Al Aqsa”) and face Makkah while praying. Despite there being Muslims who are fine people, Islam itself is fundamentally a violent, primitive, oppressive, ghoulish ideology which should be outlawed in all normal countries. We should not forget that one of the US Navy’s (and Marine Corps’) first battles was against the “Barbary Pirates” (1801-1805) — the Muslims of North Africa, who were predating upon shipping traffic and taking slaves. US President Jefferson wasn’t having any of it. Trump seems to be following his playbook, may he be successful!

As of this writing, Iran has lobbed missiles and/or flown drones at: Israel (well, ok, fair enough), the UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Iraq, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, and (apparently accidentally) Turkey. Who aren’t they mad at? Fortunately, the number of missiles fired has been dropping from day to day, as their launch facilities are degraded by allied firepower.

The weather this shabbat will be colder than average, turning wet (apparently). Apart from the rain, there may also be gifts from Iran. I will be staying at home this shabbat — THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!

This shabbat we’re going to have:
pita, meatballs, rice, homemade ḥummus, various salatim, and many desserts.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
