Israel update: still no gov’t, still no butter. But the weather’s been cool and dry, so that’s all right!

Because Israel’s butter situation is so dire, Daniela sent my son-in-law Jeremy to us with an emergency package of (Israeli, “Tnuva”) butter… from the USA. OK, that’s not the actual reason Jeremy came: in fact his brother got married, so we celebrated with them just the other day. It was great to see Jeremy, even without the babies or Daniela (and even had he not brought butter). Of course, if he had brought Daniela and the babes…

The wedding itself was not a particularly unusual Israeli Jewish wedding. But the volume of the “band” was so extreme, I was afraid I was going to suffer a concussion. As it is, I put in my “Bluetooth earphones” to try to block the worst of it, with only partial success. Between the dangerously loud sound1 and the flashing “disco” lighting, I was lucky to escape without a migraine. But “mazal tov” to the bride and groom; and it was nice to see our daughter’s in-laws again!

Sarah and I did our best to be affable in adversity; she was more successful than I.

My apologies. I don’t have a collection of odd and/or pithy “news” items this week. I was too busy with clients and reworking 8th’s manual in “Markdown” (MD). I’ve been doing that because MD support is a new feature in the next release of 8th, and using it simplifies a number of things.

For example: I can now produce “HTML” and “PDF” versions of the manual quickly from one set of source files, and editing the files is easy with my preferred editor and this amazing add-on for it. I’m refining the 8th script I use to create the consolidated HTML manual so that it will look as similar as possible to the former version (created with some cursing and extra effort using LibreOffice).

The weather is scheduled to remain cool and dry, with the barest hint of perhaps maybe a few drops of rain around Monday. I don’t believe it.

We’re back to the core three this shabbat. We’ll satisfy our souls with:
homemade ḥalla, red lentil soup, onion soup, shepherd’s pie, various salatim, and spice cake.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!

1 I’m not exaggerating. The sound was so intense, I got a whole-body massage just sitting in a chair.
