I hope all my Americanos had a happy (or, at least, peaceful) Thanksgiving. Here in the Land we had what you might call an exciting week.
What happened first: two bombings in Jerusalem. It’s been quite a while since we experienced that sort of thing, and perhaps people became a bit complacent and forgot to pay attention to abandoned bags.
Then: an Israeli Druze teenager was involved in a serious car accident in Jenin, and taken to the hospital there. While on life-support, a band of armed terrorists came in, disconnected him from life-support, and stole away with his body. Their intent was to swap it for some dozen terrorists held in Israeli prisons.
They didn’t count on the fact that the Druze have balls and don’t care at all about political correctness, or what the West might think. They issued a public statement to the effect that if the body wasn’t released back to the grieving family within 24 hours, things would happen. Then the Druze kidnapped an Arab from Jenin, to underscore their point. Guess what? The boy’s body was returned to his family right quick.
As I pointed out to someone on Twitter who was appalled at the Druze reaction, “we don’t live in Switzerland” — and unfortunately, force is the only language our peace-partners actually comprehend. If we’re very lucky, our leaders will learn the lesson.

- Only 769 days later, CBS confirms the “Hunter Biden laptop” story. I wonder if all the people who were deplatformed for talking about it back in the day, will get compensation? Unlikely…
- “Survival Lily” talks about the unfolding crisis in Europe. They’re praying it won’t be as cold a winter as last year.
- The “Lotus eaters” discuss Qatar’s Gay Pride.
- Finally, the JPost asks if anyone (in Israel) foresaw the hi-tech layoffs sweeping the country? TL;DR: no.
To change the tone thus far of the blog: yesterday we attended a “bat-mitzva” party for a girl we don’t know, and hadn’t heard of a month ago. She’s the granddaughter of my 3C1RA (third-cousin once-removed, ascending – that is, a generation before me). That makes her my 4C1RD — the most distant relative I’ve actually ever been in contact with.
The party was in Rishon LeTsion, so about an hour’s drive from our place. Despite my curiosity as to how it happened that I decided to accept the invitation (from my 3C1RA’s wife) to such an event, once there I did have a good time. This set of cousins (others were there as well) are all related to me through my maternal grandmother’s paternal grandmother. Nice bunch of folks, and it’s quite clear we’ll be seeing a lot more of them.
Since Esther’s got to do a lot of work today (which is unusual for a Friday), I’m tasked with most of the meal preparation. Fortunately, I’ve got this!
Our weather is cold and rainy, probably more rain on shabbat. My forecast is for a cozy day inside.
This shabbat we’ll do “Thanksgiving-style”:
homemade ḥalla,
red lentil soup (in honor of the parasha),
turkey shawarma,
sausage standalone “stuffing”,
candied yams,
kumquat chutney,
various salatim,
and cookies.
