Exciting news (but not in a good way): Esther was rear-ended on her way back from work this week. She had stopped because the cars in front of her had stopped; the guy behind her wasn’t apparently paying attention to the road, and smacked into her car. The good news is Esther wasn’t seriously hurt, though she’s got some aches and pains from the incident. The car, on the other hand, sustained substantial damage to its rear.

The guy who hit her didn’t hand over his insurance information or drivers’ licence; he was shy, I guess. However, Esther did get his plate number, and our insurance agent was able to determine his insurance company from that. Turns out, it’s the same company we use. So the car is in the shop for repairs, and it may take some time before we get it back. We don’t know yet how the insurance bit will play out; updates will, of course, be forthcoming as we get them.

The next day I awakened to find that one of the ceiling light-fixtures in our salon had detached from its moorings, and was hanging solely by its electrical wires. In a stroke of good fortune, the fixture didn’t crash to the floor and break. I was able to re-attach it without further incident, though I still have no clue as to why it came loose.

This isn’t how the new year is supposed to begin!

About the town:

Sarah and Yarin are off to a vacation in France and Belgium. We wish them a safe and enjoyable journey, and remind them not to overstuff themselves with fine chocolates.

Daniela and her crew spent Rosh HaShanah with Jeremy’s parents, and by all accounts had a good time. We also had a good R”H, getting some relatively fresh air on our walks to the synagogue and resting between-times.

I started in on the garden, and was able to upgrade one portion from “terrible” to “mediocre”. There’s a lot more work ahead of me…

Our weather was “hot” this week, in the mid-30s (that’s low-to-mid-90s for you Fahrenheiters). It’s supposed to stay hot through shabbat and warm next week. Autumn isn’t appearing as quickly as we might like…

Our menu for shabbat may include:
homemade ḥalla, curried lentil soup, roast beef, roasted yams, various salatim, apple-cake, and cookies.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
