And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim; and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight (Num 13:33)
The fundamental problem of the spies was they didn't have faith in themselves. The saw themselves as "grasshoppers", and not as humans. When they saw the fierce inhabitants of the Land, they exaggerated the severity of the situation, because they didn't believe in themselves and apparently had forgotten God's promise that indeed they would displace the residents of the Land, whether fierce or not.
That same lack of self-confidence appeared in King Saul; for example, And when Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid. (Samuel I 17:11). And as opposed to him David the son of Yishai, who was still a young youth: … for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should have taunted the armies of the living God? (ibid 26) … Then said David to the Philistine: 'Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast taunted (ibid 45). And as opposed to the spies, Calev and Yehoshua: Only rebel not against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us; their defence is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us; fear them not (Num 14:9)
In our very days, the same story unfolds again. Our rulers, lacking faith and lacking self-confidence, surrender to our uncircumsized-of-heart enemies, who taunt the armies of God the Lord of Israel. How long will we permit ourselves to continue thus? When will the descendant of the son of Yishai come, and return us to a Godly governance?
