According to the law which they shall teach thee, and according to the judgment which they shall tell thee, thou shalt do (Deut 17:11)
In our verse, the expression "they shall teach thee" refers to the Court of 71, which is also known as the "Sanhedrin". The Torah requires that we obey them and all their rulings. It is clear that their authority to compel the people derives from our verse.
Beyond that, it is an exceptional proof of the fact that there are actually two Torahs: the "Written Torah", from which our verse was taken -- and the "Oral Torah", which is composed mainly from the rulings of the Sanhedrin along with the explanations which Moshe received from God Himself. It is important to remember that that which is said in the Court of 71 is also considered "Torah", and it too is binding upon us.
We commence the month of Elul 5770 with the hope and aspiration that in the year 5771 (may it be blessed!) which is quick approaching us, it become possible for the Jewish people to restore the Great Court. Not the (Israeli) "High Court of Justice", whose cynical name only indicates that which it is certainly not -- but rather the Court of the entire Jewish people, a Court which is completely dedicated to justice and law in line with the Torah of Moshe our Teacher. May it be His will!
