The holiday was a pleasant one, though the back-to-back holiday-plus-shabbat was more than we’ve become used to. Yes, I know: all you folks in the Exile have two-days all the time; you’re just so brave and stunning!
A bit of excitement this week: there was a sudden, very strong, rain storm. It rained buckets for quite a while, leading to water coming in through our “fixed” ceiling. So, that was fun. I actually had to put a bucket under the leak which was streaming, not dripping. Fortunately, the rain ceased before I needed to call Noah. Our roof repairman is on speed-dial.
Since my client doesn’t want to pay for AWS or Google’s services at this point, I created a pub/sub server in 8th, to work with the application I’m developing for them. It was an interesting sub-project, and if I may say so, I did a very nice job!
Various:
- Young people have been misled about everything, according to Peter Boghossian.
- Female engineer Po says women can have it all. Not necessarily what you might think, though.
- Haters gloat over Israelis arrested in Dubai. But there’s a twist…
- Holly talks about a shocking thing that almost nobody knows.
- How long does it take “BrutePrint” to unlock 10 different smartphones?
- And: Matt Walsh cancels a new, and awful, song from the recent Disney remake of The Little Mermaid.
Around pesaḥ I planted a sad looking horseradish root in a corner in the back, hoping that one day we would have fresh horseradish and wouldn’t have to pay exorbitant prices for a root. It sat there, for roughly a month, without making progress. Then a leaf appeared, and seemed to barely hold on. This last week, it exploded into action, and we’ve got a brawny horseradish bush! Fortunate that I had the foresight to plant it in a physically restricted area so it doesn’t take over the world.
Esther and I plan on taking a mini-vacay this coming week, heading over the hills to the greener side of life. We’ll relax in a spa-like environment, sipping wine from crystal flutes and being pampered. Or at least, that’s what I’ve imagined.
The weather’s been OK, by and large, but we’re looking at a severe heatwave for shabbat: probably up to 40C or beyond today (Friday), 35 or so on Saturday. I do not approve!
Back to a normal schedule this shabbat. Sur la table:
home-made pita,
chicken shewarma,
kebabs,
rice pilaf,
roasted vegetables,
various salatim,
and strawberry sherbet.
This week’s parasha (in Israel) read in the Yemenite manner.
Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
