The last blog entry for 2022!
We’ve been having a particularly good time with the family. My newly-found sister joined us for a few days, which was very nice (and edifying!). Jeremy gave a great presentation on my “Y-DNA line”, which was really interesting. Found out I’m related to Ulysses S Grant (via a DNA line extending back some 4600 years; so not a particularly close relative. Our common ancestor is from about 2600 years ago). I’m also related to a bunch of European royalty via the same lineage. Not that I’m in any line of ascension, you understand…
Despite my regal ancestry, I’ve been suffering a cold the entire time we’ve been here (it started before we left, but I was on the mend). I believe the blame for my continued substandard health lies with the ambulatory Petri dishes (though, it must be said, they are all adorable!) I’d like to mention that there’s not much to recommend having a cold.
We made an attempt at visiting the American Museum of Natural History with everyone but Jeremy (who took one for the team and remained at home). The parking situation was absurdly bad (they were parking in job-lots and you had to leave your keys in the car). Then you had to stand in a very (!) long line to get in. We had thought we’d have time to enjoy some exhibits before taking our lunch (at a place we’d made reservations) — but it turned out that we saw almost nothing. Daniela is disinclined to attempt it again.
Various stuff:
- Mallen Baker on Putin’s stunning admission and other things.
- This person’s employer risked it’s core mission to “cancel” him for his views.
- How Twitter rigged the COVID debate.
- Have you ever wondered what the Hell is “Kwanzaa”?
In other news, Esther and I got new glasses. She hadn’t refreshed her prescription in some years, and I wasn’t 100% happy with mine, so we went last week and got our prescriptions renewed and ordered new glasses. We got them today, and I must say these are by far the best glasses I’ve had. So we may be going to this optician again in a couple years.
The weather became more seasonal here, so that's a good thing. It might even become warmish over the next few days.
This shabbat at Daniela’s, the menu probably includes:
homemade ḥalla,
mushroom soup,
roast salmon,
roast chicken,
mixed potatoes,
balsamic red cabbage,
“make your own” tacos (fish or steak),
various salatim,
and banana cake.
Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
