The weather was quite pleasant this week!
That didn’t help our poor Sarah, who may be suffering from kidney-stones. At least, that’s what the “urgent care” doctor told her. She’s been drugged-up, awaiting her ultrasound appointment — not too patiently, I might add. We all wish her a “רפואה שלימה” – a speedy recovery!
I took Mom to get her periodic eye-treatment yesterday. It wears both of us out for the rest of the day. The good news: the doctor said her eyes are improving and she doesn’t need to come as often as she has been, which is bound to improve her morale.
Esther and I worked, as usual. My work consisted mainly of completing implementation of some online forms for my main client, and applying the client’s feedback to tweak those forms until they matched what they thought they had told me they wanted.
A few articles to get you going:
- Seattle, Seattle! You never disappoint! The Emerald City will be enacting a “woke math” curriculum which shows, somehow, that “Western math” is “racist”.
- Not to be outdone, John Oliver (a “comedian”) wants to wokely illustrate that American itself is “white supremacist”.
- Believe it or not: “Kindergarten Cop” was canceled in Portland because it “promoted a "school-to-prison pipeline"”. I wish I was kidding.
- The Dems are exhibiting cruelty to seniors by continuing to run Biden. It’s not funny anymore, the man should be getting treatment.
- Most former Presidents maintain a non-partisan retirement. Not Obama! He couldn’t even let a funeral proceed without political hectoring. Shame!
- And: it’s finally been officially confirmed that Trump himself was the target of the Obama administration’s “Russia probe”. Are any of the responsible parties going to be held to account for it? Don’t hold your breath.
The “woke math” brouhaha has created a veritable Twitter-storm of people (mathematicians, among them), aching to prove that “2 + 2” does not always equal “4”, and that our insistence that it does is (somehow) White and Eurocentric and Colonialist. Never mind that people of all different ethnicities and races all discovered in ancient times that 2+2=4. I mean, we really owe our “Western” mathematical notation to the ancient Hindus of India. Not very White or European, but hey!
And yes, it can be true that “2+2=5” if you redefine what you mean by “+”, and probably what you mean by “2” and “5”. There is no shortage of mathematical niceties which can give you that sort of answer (or any other answer you desire). But that’s not what (most) people mean by “+” or the numerals; and in any event, you need to use rather advanced “Western math” to get those peculiar results. I cringe to think of the impending collapse of the West.
As for me, I spent a good amount of effort this week on various bug fixes for 8th. Them cobwebs! I’m hoping to make another release in the next two weeks.
We’re looking forward to some cooling (even going below average for the season). That will be nice!
Our shabbat menu this time around consists at least partly of:
homemade ḥalla,
potato-leek soup,
stuffed veggies,
various salatim,
and cake.
Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
