We had a relatively quiet week. Relatively so, since Thursday was apparently the end of the school-year exams for the Arab population in the surrounding towns, and they celebrated all day long by firing (illegal) fireworks and (illegal) guns. They do that every year, without any reaction from our security forces. Other than that, the week was actually quiet.

Esther and I went to the shuq this week. I needed to pick up a car-part from the dealer in the southern part of Jerusalem, and figured we might as well stop by the shuq and get some produce. After months of shopping in supermarkets, it was amazing to see really good, ripe, fruits and vegetables. Fresh figs are incredible!

My efforts to learn Arabic using Duolingo are proceeding slowly. I can read about 80% of what I see, though I can’t understand more than a few dozen words. I question the utility of some of Duolingo’s choices. For example, knowing how to say “Carrie is a good Tunisian translator” seems oddly specific and not very useful. But I trudge on nevertheless…

Forget about the brouhaha surrounding the anti-Semitism and racism of “The Squad”, the economic upheavals surrounding climate change, Iran’s aggressive stances, or any other minor annoyances. The real news this week is that the new “007” is a black woman. So brave and beautiful! Someone snarkily commented that $0.07 was how much the film would make. I disagree: it will be a success — just not amongst the hordes of Bond fans. And it’s about time that a British secret-agent who is deployed mostly to majority white-countries be portrayed by a Person Of Colour — so that he or she can immediately be pointed out by the crowds of Pale Skinned People, and detained by the PSP’s secret police.

Oh, sure, it’s absurd; but it’s not as absurd as my failed efforts to get falafel vendors to give me enough hot-sauce on my falafel-in-pita sandwich! They think that my ludicrously White And Privileged Skin means that I cannot abide spicy food. Little do they know my stomach’s not actually white!

Around the bend:

I’ve been working on various things in “8th”. I published an RFQ for my sync protocol, am reworking the manual (which is a lot of work), and fixed a sinister bug which nobody reported.

The twins have learned to steal Oreos while nobody’s looking, the pirates! On the bright side, they shared the plunder. Sarah’s inundated with work now that her store is running a month-long special sale in honor of 20 years since “Harry Potter” was translated into Hebrew. It’s hard to believe so many Israelis can relate to the HP stories.

The weather has been unremarkably summery, and will stay that way for the next week. We’ll stay cool and sip water.

This shabbat we’re looking forward to the pleasant weather, our new seats in shul, and:
ḥalla, chicken schnitzel, roasted yams, braised cabbage, salatim: potato, tofu, kohlrabi, and various others; pastries, and fruit.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
