Hold up, Jack! For the second week in a row, we’ve left shabbat to discover Strange Things were Afoot while we relaxed. This time: Biden dropped out of the race after having repeatedly said (most recently only a few days before) that he was no way, no sir, not ever! going to do that. Now, the “resignation” was done over “X”, and the man himself hadn’t been seen since the previous Wednesday. Was it a “coup”? No joke!
Of course, if Biden isn’t up to running a campaign, one expects he’s not up to staying in office. So calls for the 25th to be invoked are being made. But do we really expect any of the posturing to amount to anything? I mean, the Republicans have proven time and time again they have neither balls nor the will to use real power.
Fun and games:
- Pitching the US elections, and Trump vs Kamala, comedians’ takes.
- “Sympathy to deep admiration”: Pal. public tells what they really think about Israel and Jews and “peace”.
- Netanyahu spoke in front of Congress, having been invited by a bipartisan group. Many Democrats boycotted it, including the current VP and presumptive D candidate. Not a good start to US/IL relations in 2025 (assuming The Cackler is victorious, which remains to be seen).
- Sarah Haider’s thoughts on “realignment”.
- And: a version of Windows from 1992 saved Southwest Airlines from being affected by the “Crowdstrike” system-update error that took out large chunks of the world’s computers this week.
As for us, today we’re heading out to meet up with Sarah and Yarin and his family in Ramat Gan. A get-together before the youngsters make their exodus from the Land to the USA. We’re hoping that it works out well for them with as few bumps along the way as possible. And (of course) we hope they return here in time, just as we hope the rest of our fellow Jews in the USA come to see where their future lay.
Because we’re going to be there most of today, Esther’s spent Thursday cooking up a pile of food — some to bring there, some for us for shabbat.
This shabbat the menu includes (at least):
homemade ḥalla,
chicken and rice,
various salatim,
and watermelon.
Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
