We made it! (to our daughter’s place, that is).

The days leading up to our trip we were mostly involved in tying up loose ends and such. Packing didn’t take much time, as most of the space in our luggage was occupied by stuff for the Grand’s and their keepers. We did bring a few changes of clothing, but not a whole lot else.

We’ve usually taken a taxi to the airport in the past because parking there is expensive; but since we’re taking a shorter trip this time, the cost of parking was about the same as taking a taxi. So we agreed to just drive and park there. Traffic was very light; perhaps the lightest I’ve experienced in Israel.

When we arrived at the airport, the long-term parking lot we had used in the past was full and closed, and we were directed to an “overflow lot”. To our great surprise and pleasure, the lot was free — so this time around, the cost of parking will be much less than what a taxi would have cost. Assuming, that is, that our car is still there when we return…

Once inside the airport, we discovered that almost nobody was waiting at the ElAl check-in line. So we got through that in record time and proceeded to the security-check line. There, we were ushered into the “old folks line” — presumably due to my elderly appearance; surely not because of Esther! As a result, we got to our gate very quickly.

Our flight was scheduled to arrive in NY half an hour early. But in fact we were delayed at the gate for an hour because of congestion over Greek air-space. I’ve been forbidden to talk about the lad who was seated next to me on the plane, but I’ll just say that I would have been glad to have had a diminished sense of smell. Anyway, we eventually got to JFK, where upon landing we were delayed another half hour or so waiting for our gate to clear and the plane to park.

Daniela was waiting for us with the Grands, and had to make a few circuits of the airport before we managed to get out of the airport. We were super excited to see them all, and very happy to have a personal chauffeur!

The rest of the week we spent getting un-lagged, and entertaining and being entertained by the Grands. So much fun, so little time!

This shabbat’s menu is by Daniela, so I have no idea what’s on it except that it will be good!

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
