Hi, again!

This past shabbat was peaceful... for us. But the residents of the southern communities in Israel were treated to a non-stop barrage of missiles from the friendly folks in Gaza. The "hostilities" continued most of the week, despite the "cease-fire" agreement -- and the south is still getting ordnance fired upon them. So far, more than 200 missiles have been "absorbed" by our heroes in the southern communities. We ask you to pray for their safety, and for our feckless leaders to react appropriately.

It's been said "a picture is worth a thousand words". That can certainly be true, but our enemies and detractors have turned that on its head so that now "a picture is worth a thousand lies". Shortly after "hostilities" commenced, a "tweet" made its way around the world. It purported to show a young Gazan Arab girl killed by Israeli fire in the current round of the "cycle of violence". Problem is, the picture dates from 2006, and the girl was injured (and died) falling off a swing. No Israelis involved at all.

The lies are indeed egregious, but so pervasive that even "major" news sources buy into the Ballywood version of events. Partly this is due to laziness and lack of professional ethics, partly due to an ingrained anti-Semitism on the part of "the Left" and also I think partly because the truth about Arabs in Israel is just not "sexy" enough to sell copy. They are so used to lying, and so sure the world will accept their lies, that they are not even phased by the utter absurdity of claiming that a recently auctioned Judaen shekel from 66CE is a Balestinian coin! Yes, the ancient beoble, the Balestinians, really sboke Hebrew. I swear on my camel, it's true!

I'm sorry to have to say this, but the US is showing it is not Israel's friend. It seems that these days, the "Land of the Free" will only accept people who are goodthinkful. Unless they're Muslim, of course -- y'know they get a pass. I better be careful, lest I get branded as a "hate group"! Were it not for the fact that I still have family in the US and need to travel there, I would relinquish my citizenship -- I still may do that, especially if the Obaminator gets re-elected (Heaven forfend!).

But idiocy, sadly, is not confined to other peoples and places. Right here in our Land -- within rocket range of Gaza in fact! -- these not very useful idiots are chanting "no dome, no iron, IDF go to hell!. Nota bene: the "Iron Dome" anti-missile defense system, so far 90% effective, is one of the defensive measures Israel has taken against the peaceful denizens of Gaza. I'm sure those protesters would not understand or identify with the notion of being their brother's keeper.

Anyway, our week was mostly uneventful. Working, eating, sleeping and going back to work. I did make a lot of progress on my Android zemanim application. Found out that even though Android "supports Hebrew" per se, one has to go through some interesting contortions to get Hebrew displayed correctly when doing "low level" graphics sorts of things. I think this next week I'll have it mostly finished, and should be able to show y'all a screen shot or two. Won't that be fun?

Four seminary girls will be staying with us this shabbat. Hopefully they won't mind our cuisine: baked bass, ḥumus, roasted peppers, baba ghanoush, pasta salad, Israeli salad, a few other salatim, chicken-veggie soup, roast beef, potato kugel, couscous, roasted zucchini with mushrooms, schnitzel, chicken wings, fruit and chocolate 'n' peanut-butter brownies.

Until next week,
shabbat shalom!
