As of this writing, the most significant news of the week is that Trump won the US election. He’s only the second President to ever have won two non-consecutive terms, Grover Cleveland (who?) being the other one.
Surprisingly, he won both the “Electoral College” and the “popular vote” (though only the EC truly matters) and destroyed the “Blue Wall”. Hopefully this will serve to blunt the inevitable allegations that the election is “invalid” or “illegitimate”. My hopes for that are not especially high, although Harris’ concession speech was conciliatory and might help in that regard.
We have been unburdened by what might have been.
My dear friends, family, and acquaintances who are distraught by this outcome, fear not: your day will surely come again, as it always has done. However, a few words of advice, if you’ll pardon my presumption:
It turns out, much to everyone’s surprise, than telling half the electorate they’re “garbage”, or “bitter clingers”, or “deplorable”, or “racist”, or “Nazis” etc. ad nauseam – isn’t a winning strategy: try to avoid that, next time around.
Likewise, gaslighting the public: telling them the economy is great and that they are doing better financially than before, or that rampant illegal immigration isn’t happening, or that men can be women, or that a clearly senile person is “sharp as a tack”, etc. (again, ad nauseam) – is also not a winning strategy. Try to avoid telling huge lies which anyone of ordinary intelligence can fact-check.
And then, really, it’s in very poor taste to talk condescendingly to the people you’re trying to sway to your side. Nobody likes to be told they’re “stupid”, or “low-information”, etc. – even if true (perhaps, especially if true). And everyone resents it being implied through condescension.
Further, you might want to consider not insisting on calling Latinos by the ludicrous neologism “Latinx”. It not only isn’t pronounceable in Spanish, it’s nonsensical and no Latinos ever asked for it. Do the work!
Additionally: nobody is a fan of government overreach and mandates.
Finally, try to pick a candidate who isn’t a cackling idiot, and who is capable of speaking coherently, extemporaneously, for more than two minutes at a time. I mean, really.
That’s it. Have a think or two, and try to do better next time.
Anyway, this shabbat we’re going up north, attending a friend’s family event. We’ve no idea what we’ll be dining upon, or anything else except that we hope to have a pleasant time and avoid incoming missiles!
