It’s been a crazy week, not least because we went to a wedding, and to IKEA, and to a urologist, and to meet distant cousins! Far more social activity than is healthy!

Besides all that, we had not one, but two major scandals in Israel. Three, if you include last-week’s Hareidi million-man protest”.

I really dislike it when I hear my coreligionists talk about “the Hareidim” in terms which, frankly, we’ve heard from our enemies about us throughout history. My take has always been that the “way forward” is one of mutual understanding and respect and compromise. But unfortunately, as Uri points out below, the demographic time-bomb is ticking and the level of hostility being expressed on either side is only getting higher. This isn’t a good thing.

I’d sincerely like to know how many of those Haredi men are truly Torah scholars whose learning benefits us all. Likewise, I’d like to know how many of their opponents know how or why to make a berakha. To the first, I’d suggest learning a lot more of Rambam’s “Mishne Torah” and pay attention to what he has to say about “sages” who demand the public support them. To the latter, I’d also suggest reading the same halakhic work, paying attention to the reasons why we need to study Torah.

A little bit of humility and willingness to listen on both sides would be good. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Of note:

In a thankfully rare fit of stupidity, I decided to “update” the software on my email server. “Stupidity” because I’d set up the server many years ago, and it’s worked flawlessly ever since. Once the new software came online, the server ceased working. As in: not serving mail or web content (this very blog, for instance). Not good, not good at all!

Worse, I performed the update a scant few hours before we had to head out for the rest of the day. So while I scrambled to figure out what the hell had gone wrong, I was also scrambling to get ready to leave. Alas, the server remained scrambled: we returned home too late at night for me to be willing to screw it up any further.

Fortunately, email gets re-sent if it fails delivery, at least for a time. However, I can’t currently send email or see what’s sent to me (hopefully I’ll have that fixed before shabbat arrives) and that’s why, if you normally get an email from my ronware.org email, you’re getting one from gmail.com today, nebach!

I managed to get the web-server working again satisfactorily (as you can see), but it took a very large portion of the day. It turns out that the updated database server software couldn’t read the older version’s files. So I had to monkey around getting an older version of the software so I could “dump” the data and then re-import it into the new version. As for the email server, well, I spent until after midnight yesterday trying to decipher why it won’t let me log-in. I gave up when my eyes said “enough!”.

Kids: do not try this at home!

On the bright side, we had an enjoyable visit with my sixth-cousins who turned out to be very pleasant ladies! Oh, and the urologist basically informed me there’s no reason to do anything about the “stones” since they’re small. So, all’s well that ends well, in the end. But after this week’s server escapades, in the end I think I need a proctologist…

We’re still experiencing last-week’s “light heatwave”, and it’s expected to remain until Tuesday. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

This shabbat :
homemade ḥalla, split-pea soup, one-pot chicken, roasted potatoes, sesame-crusted salmon, roasted veggie salad, various salatim, chocolate cup-cakes, and ice-cream.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
