One of the users of my “8th programming language” has been pushing for 8th to be included in the “Exercism” courses. He succeeded, and those worthies just published a video introducing and discussing, among other small languages, “8th”. Very cool stuff!

I’ve also been working on a project for my main client, similar to the previous project. In that one, the contractor we’d hired to do a “front end” used a framework called Vue, which is pretty cool but heavy and complex. This time, I looked for something similar but more light-weight and found Alpine, which is much closer to how I like to work.

In manly endeavors: the roof has now been completely covered with the plastic goop. I’ve no idea what the winter weather will bring, but at least there’s hope the roof will fare better than before. I installed the other floodlight (as mentioned last week) in the front, and it illuminates the front area nicely. Finally, I performed masonry magic around the “BBQ pit” in the back, and started on the clean-up work. Will it never end?

Of interest:

  • Prof. Hossenfelder explains why capitalism is good, with a basic explanation of how it developed.
  • Tesla’s dirty little secret, which those of us with critical-thinking skills already knew.
  • “COVID is coming, COVID is coming!”, said Paul Revere, never. In anticipation of election season, various places in the USA are commencing mask nonsense again. Have we learned nothing from COVID, Phase I?
  • A climate-scientist left out the full truth in order to get his paper published, and he’s not an outlier in this regard.
  • Mallen Baker on talk of “civil war” hitting the mainstream. Please, pay close attention to events unfolding in the USA.
  • And what a light-saber would really do to you, for some value of “really”.

Esther contracted a fever this week, accompanied by a sore throat. She’s been to the doctor, who was as unhelpful as they usually are when confronted with a cold or flu. The lad double-masked, assuming she’s been stricken with the deadly COVID virus, which we both found amusing. He did give her antibiotics “just in case”. Nevertheless, she’s still under the weather and we’ll be avoiding (external) human contact for the next several days. I seem to have dodged the bullet so far…

I received the “Jerusalem Talmud” edition I’d requested from the Hebrew Academy. It only contains the Talmud text, without commentary, but with notes on textual differences. I got it because recently I’ve been getting feedback on the Mechon Mamre site with corrections to our text, and I had (up until now) no way to actually confirm (or not) those edits. Now I do, but I’m out of bookshelf space!

We’re hoping that both of us will be in top form for next shabbat’s renewal of the Jewish calendar year. It would be unfortunate were we to be less than at our best.

This shabbat the two of us will hunker-down in the house and enjoy a very basic menu:
homemade ḥalla, baked chicken, baked potatoes, green beans, various salatim, and ice-cream.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
