Well, it’s certainly been a week! I know it’s unfashionable to mention our Prophet’s words, but it seems Zechariah has some things to say which seem, to me, apropos. In case you’ve been hibernating, or have got your news from the likes of ABC, Reuters, or the BBC, let me inform you:

As I hinted last time, things have escalated rapidly. While Trump and Netanyahu gave the impression they were dithering, and it was hinted that if we struck Iran, it would be in a week or two if at all — we struck Iran with a massive first strike that took out their top military leadership, among other strategic resources.

The Iranians, once they regained their balance, responded by shooting missiles at our civilian centers at night. That’s forced us to get up, get dressed, and go to the bomb-shelter for half an hour most nights this week. At the beginning of the week we had to go through this multiple times a night, but the frequency decreased as the IAF successfully drastically deteriorated Iran’s offensive military capabilities.

Within the first day or two, the IAF achieved complete control of Iranian skies and effectively decapitated the IRGC leadership and removed from play their top nuclear scientists. At last count, they were on their fourth replacement for “top general”; I wonder how many backups they’ve got?

This Thursday morning, Iran targeted the Soroka hospital in Be’er Sheva, while claiming they were “aiming at military targets”. Note: there are no military targets near the hospital, and intercepted Telegram conversations proved they were intentionally targeting Soroka. Make of that what you will; our leadership decided that meant “Supreme Leader Khamenei” is a dead-man-walking. We’re still unsure whether the US will join or not; as of this morning, he’s said he’ll make his decision “within two weeks”. Of course, by then it’ll all be over but the kotlet frying.

And still, one may ask: what is Iran’s strategy?

Notes of note:

Given that we were glued to our screens all week, and ready to bounce to the shelter at a moment’s notice, neither of us accomplished much actual work. I did do some organizing in my office, Esther did some actual work. But it wasn’t a productive week, to put it mildly.

Due to the security situation, we’re still advised to stay away from large gatherings, and our synagogue will be operating in a “reduced format”. So, we’ll be staying home again this shabbat (which is fine by me). The weather will be standard Middle East summer, with a chance of incoming missiles.

Hopefully we’ll have a peaceful shabbat this time around, without mid-night alarms. To that end, we’ll have:
homemade ḥalla, grilled lamb, homemade ḥummus, rice, coleslaw, grilled vegetables, “Lancashire hot-pot”, various salatim, and double-chocolate muffins.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
(and happy birthday, my love!)
